The LockDown Browser will not let you do screen capture. A test that is programmed to run with Respondus LockDown will not run in another browser. The Respondus package is compatible with learning management systems. Blackboard Learn and Canvas are popular e-learning programs that work with the LockDown Browser. As of November 2018, LockDown Browser is now a default menu item. If you do not see LockDown Browser in your course menu, use the following steps to enable it. Navigate to your course in Canvas in the left menu. Click on the Navigation tab. Click on the cog adjacent to LockDown Browser and select +Enable. You must have administrative rights to install applications in order to install Lockdown Browser. Navigate to the quiz or exam that will be using the Lockdown Browser. Click Take this quiz. You should see a hyperlink that says “Download Respondus Lockdown Browser.” Clicking this will bring you to the download page. Click the Install Now button to download a zip file (.zip). Open the downloads folder and run the file titled “Install Respondus Lockdown Browser.”.

The version of Lockdown Browser available in Rutgers Canvas and Sakai is different than the version from Rutgers Blackboard. If you need to use Lockdown Browser to take an exam or quiz in both Rutgers Blackboard and Canvas/Sakai, then you will need to install two versions of the application on your computer. The directions below assume you have the Blackboard version already installed on your computer

PC

1. Follow the directions to download and install Lockdown Browser.
2. Select the option for a second institution.
3. Click Next.
4. In your Windows menu, you will now see two versions of Lockdown Browser.

Macintosh

1. Navigate to your Applications folder.
2. Locate your existing copy of Lockdown Browser.
3. Right-click to show the mouse menu.
4. Click Rename.
5. Rename the application to include version (Blackboard).
6. Follow the directions to download and install Lockdown Browser. You may opt to rename the second version for Canvas.

Some aspects of courses within Canvas can be completed using a tablet or mobile device (Chromebook, iPad, Android tablet, cell phone, etc..) However, it is necessary to have access to a computer to complete the majority of your Canvas course work. Click here for a list of Canvas technical requirements.

Web Browsers

It is recommended that you use either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome to access Canvas.

Software and Plug-ins

Students are required to have software that can open/edit Microsoft Office formatted files (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc..) All students with an active email account can install Office 2016 by accessing their email accounts and clicking on 'Office 365' followed by 'Install Office 2016.' Common browser plugins that courses typically use are Java, Adobe Flash, and Adobe Acrobat.
